Prior to her death, she demanded to have a phone installed in her crypt as she was terrified of the thought of being buried alive, but there is of course no way she’s still alive. Yet that black phone keeps ringing, nearly driving him insane, and all that comes from the other end of the line is a haunting wailing. His wife, Vivia Mandore (Diane Baker), seeks out a man named Nelson Orion (Martin Landau) who works as an architect but keeps meddling with the paranormal as a little side-project. He’s a skeptic as well so he won’t be expected to accept any supernatural goings-on if there aren’t any, and Vivia trusts he will find out the truth about the phone calls.

 

The Ghost of Sierra de Cobre is a made-for-tv horror film from 1964, written and directed by Joseph Stefano, who wrote the screenplay for Hitchcock’s Psyhco (1960). Originally, the film was a pilot for a supernatural-themed anthology series for CBS which was supposed to be called The Haunted. Nothing came of it after the CBS president James T. Aubrey left, so it was then released as a standalone film. There are some well-known names on the actors list, including Diane Baker who played Lorraine Warren in the 1991 TV movie The Haunted, and Martin Landau who played Bela Lugosi in Tim Burton’s 1994 movie Ed Wood.

 

What works very nicely for this aged obscure little ghost movie, is the atmosphere and the surroundings, and some of the effects are pretty spooky despite being very outdated today. While the movie plays mainly forwards as a mystery thriller with supernatural elements, the story itself does feel a bit too convoluted at times and there are certain scenes that simply doesn’t go anywhere and adds absolutely nothing to the plot, like one scene where Nelson meets a woman on the beach whom he arranges a meeting with later, but whom we never see again. I’m not sure if this is just pure filler content or if there were plans of expanding some of these scenarios a bit more.

 

Overall, though, The Ghost of Sierra de Cobre is a spooky old flick where I can easily imagine that the audience back in those days would find the effects of the ghost simply referred to as The Bleeding Ghost to be scarier than what they were used to seeing on screen. In fact, one of the reasons for the TV pilot not being picked up anywhere was that it was considered too scary for the American audiences at the time. Of course, that sounds perfectly laughable now, but aside from not exactly having the means to scare today’s audience, it’s an interesting little movie to watch.

The Green Slime (1968)

The Green SlimeThe human race is in danger when a 6.000.000 ton asteroid is on its way to Earth to wipe us all out. But don’t worry, a group of astronauts is sent to blow it to pieces before it reaches the atmosphere. They land on the asteroid with a small shuttle sent from the space station Gamma 3, and the set design looks as convincing as a high school play. At first glance, you may assume this was a cheap space opera from the 1950s, but The Green Slime is from the same year as 2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968. Both also distributed by MGM, just so you know. While they implant the explosives, they come across some – yeah, you guessed it – green, glowing slime. Nothing much to worry about since it will go down with the explosion. Ha, so you thought. A sample of the green liquid manages to attach itself to one of the astronaut’s space suits and becomes a blind passenger to the space station.

 

After they are back safe and sound to the space station and mission completed, they celebrate with champagne and funk music with a group of young nurses. To have some shallow character development thrown in we have some boring and stiff melodrama, strained friendships and such bullshit we couldn’t care much less about. The real fun begins when the green slime(r) starts to transform itself into cute rubber monster creatures with a big eye and electric tentacles to fry their victims. They also scream constantly like a bunch of horny witches on helium while having a non-stop orgasm.

 

The Green Slime is an odd hybrid of a production and a campy, goofy, lighthearted schlockfest like you’d expect from such a title, and if not by the surf rock theme song that belongs more in a Saturday Morning Cartoon intro. An ambitious project on paper with a script from Batman creator Bill Finger that was supposed to be a fifth film in a film series from the big Hollywood company/distributor MGM and directed by an Italian guy. Although the film is an Italian project financed by American dollars, it somehow managed to end up at Toei Studios in Japan with Kinji Fukasaku (Battle Royale) in the directing chair. The cultural crashes could be heard all over the Pacific Ocean.

 

The Green Slime leaves more of the impression of being directed by some naive film student on his first acid trip based on a comic book from the mind of a seven-year-old. The effects and production design are straight from the the stone age and made from kids toys that gave me Dinosaur War Izenborg flashbacks, a dear childhood favorite of mine. So I can’t really complain, can I…

 

Although there’s little to zero tension to be felt here, the actors (most of them) tries their very best to keep a straight face and convince us that they’re in serious danger with the silly rubber monsters wobbling confused and disorientated around. They seem as threatening and sinister as something you’d see in a Halloween special of Barney & Friends. While the whole cast consists of western Caucasians, a group of Japanese children got the daunting task to wear the rubber – and assumingly heavy costumes which they clearly struggle to wear without almost falling over like a piss-drunk hobo every three seconds. I could easily imagine a string of J-cussing to be heard behind the costumes beetween the takes. Kuso!

 

So overall, The Green Slime is a fun, silly Sci-Fi, B-movie schlock that is suitable for the whole family, and was also the very first film to be mocked on the pilot episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. It’s available on DVD and Blu-ray from Warner Archive Collection.

The Skull (1965)

The SkullDr. Maitland is collecting esoterica, and one day the guy who is his regular source of such items offers him a skull that is supposedly the remains of Marquis de Sade. He soon discovers that the skull is possessed by an evil spirit who turns people into crazed killers.

 

The Marquis de Sade was a French nobleman born in 1740, and even those who don’t know about him will most likely know the words derived from his name: sadism and sadist. He wrote several novels, plays, and short stories, and is most known for his erotic works depicting sexual fantasies with a strong focus on violence. The Marquis became infamous due to his sexual crimes and abuse against young men, women, and even children. He was arrested and imprisoned multiple times, including in the Château de Vincennes, where he successfully appealed his death sentence. There, he remained imprisoned (despite an escape attempt). During the rest of his life he resumed to his writing, and during the last four years of his life (until his death in 1814) he began a sexual relationship with 14 year old Madeleine LeClerc, daughter of an employee at Charenton. After his burial, his skull was removed from his grave for phrenological examination. No one knows what happened to the skull after that, so there’s a little bit of historical info serving as the basis of the inspiration for this film.

 

The movie starts off with a gravedigger opening Marquis de Sade’s grave, chops off the corpse’s head with the spade and takes it home with him. After using chemicals to remove all the flesh and skin, he soon becomes the skull’s first victim. Of course, the skull comes into the hands of Marco, who is providing Dr. Maitland (Peter Cushing) with the esoterica he’s eager to buy for this collection. Sir Matthew Phillips (Christoper Lee) tries to warn him about the skull’s evil abilities, but of course, his warnings go unheeded.

The Skull serves as a good example of 60’s horror, and with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in the major roles it’s a little surprising that it hasn’t attracted more attention. The possessed skull and its levitation and movements with occasionally visible strings can probably be seen as a tad bit cheesy by today’s standards, but that’s just part of the old-fashioned charm of horror films like this. The effects of the Skull itself is a big part of the entertainment of this film, and during Dr. Maitland’s descent into madness due to the skull’s influence on him, there are some pretty tripping scenes.

 

Now, with the Marquis de Sade as the main focus of the film, you might expect more references to the erotic aspects (of which there aren’t any) but remember that this movie came out during a time where the censoring was pretty strict, so that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Overall, it’s well worth a watch, especially if you want to see the combined talents of Lee and Cushing. And, of course, if you want to watch a floating skull with visible strings attached to it!
